Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in the southern part of South America located on a long, narrow coastal strip, flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the West and the Andes Mountains to the East. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast and Argentina to the east. The official language is Spanish, and the capital city is Santiago.

History

For almost three centuries part of the Spanish Empire, Chile declared its independence in 1810. In the War of the Pacific (1879-83), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern regions, although bloody conflict with the local Araucanian Indians continued well into the 1880s. Following a US-backed coup against the country's leftist government, Chile endured a brutal 17-year military dictatorship (1973 - 1990) before returning to democratic rule. In 1995, it is considered one of Latin America's most stable, prosperous and developed nation.

Tiberium Universe

Chile was one of the countries which sided with the Global Defence Initiative during the First Tiberium War. While Chile had been more stable than most other Latin American country, a terrorist bomb-making lab was allegedly located here. A raid by GDI forces some time prior to the events of the First Tiberium War against the facility allegedly took place, which claimed the life of at least one GDI operative. Later, this turned out not to be true, as it was discovered he was part of the Dead 6.[1]

Prior to the Second Tiberium War, GDI's Orca Bombers supported by Orca Fighters destroyed several Nod defense sites near Santiago as part of Operation World Watch.[2]

In 2047, Chile continued to support GDI. On the outbreak of the Third Tiberium War, the arid north of the country was designated part of Yellow Zone Y-5, but most of the country was designated Blue Zone B-8. The Chilean Blue Zone became a major base for GDI. Among the important facilities maintained by the Global Defence Initiative in Chile were a large space-launch complex, as well as research facilities. Among the distinguished researchers working there is Dr. Alphonse Giraud, a well-regarded Tiberium researcher.

During the Third Tiberium War, Nod forces under the command of LEGION infiltrated the Chilean Blue Zone in order to capture Alphonse Giraud. In the process Nod forces caused considerable havoc, destroying among other things experimental GDI aircraft such as the Ironside experimental troop transport and a newly developed Supersonic fighter. GDI rushed in reinforcements to the scene by air and sea but Nod managed to airlift Dr. Giraud out of the area.

As a Blue Zone, Chile was most likely attacked and devastated by the Scrin invasion force in the later stage of the War. Intel on this matter is currently incomplete.
