The Crane was a pseudo-Construction Yard support structure deployed by both the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod during the Third Tiberium War.

Background[]

Similar to the construction yard, the Crane is equipped with nano-assemblers, computers, and control units. This allows for an additional structure to be constructed at any given moment, allowing forward bases to be established faster[1].

Following their more decentralized nature, on occasion the Brotherhood used cranes as complete substitutes for Construction Yards, especially in fronts where having a massive command center would draw unwanted attention.

Game Structure[]

Constructible only from Construction Yards, each Crane afforded an extra build queue in both the Structures and Armory tabs. However, they are not without limit - a crane's construction queue cannot build additional cranes, and in most versions is also unable to build defensive structures and superweapons.

However, Cranes were not designed for combat, and as such are very fragile and are unarmed. While they did expand a Construction Yard's ground control radius, it was more often wiser to place them in the heart of a base to protect them from damage.

The Scrin deployed structures called Foundries for this purpose. Aside from the difference in name and visuals, they functioned identically to human cranes.

Trivia[]

  • GDI crane operators tend to get bored in their line of work and often "do the wave" with their crane's arm.[2]
