Grenadier squad all ready!
- Grenadier squad leaving the Barracks

Greandier Squads were assault infantry deployed by the Global Defense Initiative during the Third Tiberium War.

Background[]

With Riflemen confined to anti-infantry duties and Missile Squads limited in effectiveness against certain targets, Grenadiers were deployed to the field to blast through enemy lines. They were armed with rocket-assisted grenades with minimal on-board AI and guidance, capable of steering themselves right through windows. As such, they could quickly clear enemy infantry out of garrisoned structures, and were most commonly found in urban combat zones where close-quarters combat frequently occurred.[1][2]

Game Unit[]

Grenadier Squads excel at antipersonnel duties and can also eliminate moderately armored vehicles and most structures. The spread of their grenades on impact means that they often inflict heavy damage to all troops within a squad, and can severely weaken if not outright kill weaker them. They also boast garrison-clearing abilities, and the lack of such weapons within GDI's arsenal makes them quite valuable in urban settings. Upgrading them with and using their special EMP Grenades make them a threat to even heavy enemy armor; with their target completely paralyzed, supporting units can easily finish them off.

Grenadiers are excellent within vehicles with infantry fire-ports, such as Guardian APCs and Hammerheads. Garrisoned Hammerheads especially are lethal to troop concentrations, they need merely fly near the garrisoned structure before it is cleared. The Grenadiers' multipurpose weapon makes for suitable fire support against most types of enemies, and the vehicles' speed and higher armor allows them to fight (and clear garrisons) with greater ease. In this vein, they make for suitable troops to station within Steel Talons Heavy Harvesters to combat most threats. Note that they are unable to use their EMP Grenades while garrisoned, however, as they must be manually ordered to do so and their UI is not available when inside something else.

However, the nature of their grenades also bears some drawbacks as well. They require roughly one or two seconds to reach their target's position, and faster-moving units can dodge them before they are hit. Additionally, the grenades can and will injure friendly troops within their blast radius, though anything short of a rapid advance through enemy lines means that this issue does not arise too frequently. Their armor is also not especially notable, and the squad will fall if exposed to anti-infantry weapons for too long. This issue can be somewhat remedied by the Composite Armor upgrade (Tiberium Field Suits for ZOCOM Grenadiers), though even so they remain far from the toughest unit in the game. Finally, as with most infantry units, they are completely helpless against aircraft, and units such as Venoms or Stormriders can make quick work of them.

Abilities[]

EMP grenades (GDI/ZOCOM only) This targeted ability orders Grenadiers upgraded with EMP grenades to hurl a salvo of charges that can temporarily disable even the largest vehicle long enough for friendly forces to bring it down. The EMP has a radius of 60 and lasts 10 seconds. This ability has a 0:30 cooldown (Kane's Wrath only) (Ctrl+S).
Call for transport
Call for transport When available, the Grenadier squad can call for pickup by a V-35 Ox transport for a small fee of $200. Has 2:00 cool down, requires Airfield. (Ctrl+A).
