The Guardian cannon was GDI's Tier 1 anti-armor base defense in Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and its expansion, Kane's Wrath.

Background[]

The Guardian cannon was a 105mm gun protected by a forward-facing shield and mounted on a rotating platform. It was effective against vehicles, but ineffective against infantry.[1] In addition to being a common sight at GDI bases, two of these weapons were also mounted on the battle base.[2]

Game structure[]

The Guardian cannon is a dedicated anti-vehicle base defense for GDI. While not as versatile, hard-hitting, or long-ranged as Nod's Laser Turrets, it is more durable than the laser turret hub or any of its turrets (about 30% than the former and 500% than the latter) and puts less of a drain on the power supply. As such, its use is highly situational and is more designed towards tying up enemy units to allow for a reaction force to arrive and shore up the defense, rather than beating off an attack on its own. A pair of Predator tanks can outperform the Guardian with ease while gathering veterancy, but on the other hand, they also need to be pulled back to base for repairs and lack stealth detection like the Guardian.

Kane's Wrath increases the Guardian's firepower, doubling its fire rate and making the railgun upgrade apply to Guardians as well (for vanilla GDI and Steel Talons), making it a mainstream, rather than situational base defense, and a considerably more powerful alternative to the Predator.

Trivia[]

  • In the game files, it sometimes referred to as the Golem cannon.
  • The Guardian Cannon's buildup animation does not play at all when the game's animation quality settings are set to low. For the animation's duration, the cannon is completely invisible.
