Nuclear Winter was the final mission in the Chinese campaign of Command & Conquer: Generals.[1]

Key units[]

Plot[]

Lin Zhong informed the Chinese Commander that the GLA cell responsible for its asia-pacific terror activities had been located in Dushanbe, the capital city of Aldastan. In order to destroy this cell, the use of China's nuclear arsenal has been authorized.

A large Chinese ground force marched toward the city. However, GLA commando Jarmen Kell launched an ambush on the Chinese forces in a snowy valley. After Kell killed the lead Red Guard, GLA SCUD launchers launched their payloads against the Chinese formation, throwing it into disarray as the rest of the GLA forces charged. However, Chinese MiGs quickly destroyed the SCUD launchers while the surviving Chinese forces destroyed the GLA ambush party.

Gen Nuclear Winter parade

With the help of two surviving construction dozers, the Chinese Commander established a base of operations. Meanwhile, Jarmen Kell escaped and hid himself in a tower in the town center, preparing to snipe any unsuspecting Chinese infantry and vehicle driver that approached. In the main GLA base to the north, protected by many Stinger sites and tunnel networks, the GLA constructed a SCUD storm and prepared to use it against the Chinese forces.

Despite fierce GLA resistance, the Chinese forces eradicated the GLA presence in Dushanbe and held a military parade through the liberated city to celebrate the defeat of the GLA in Asia. However, the GLA as a whole was far from defeated, as China would soon learn...

Walkthrough[]

What you'll start with won't be much, given what happened with your initial assault forces. Upgrade one of your Overlords with a Speaker Tower and another with a Gatling Cannon - these allow them to heal nearby allies and gun down infantry as well as tanks. Once you have beaten off the initial GLA forces, a pair of Dozers will come the way you came. After your forces are healed, get them moving southeast to a GLA base. Crush the defenders and everything there, but if you wish, spare their Supply Stash as you can use it to create workers to build GLA buildings, giving you the full might of both the GLA and China. With the most imminent threat defeated, you can begin base construction. Note that, if the general possesses more than 5000 credits for any reason - enough to build a Nuclear Missile Silo - the GLA will launch their SCUD storm at your base.

The initial forces should serve reasonably well as a defense for early attacks, but it would still be wise to invest in additional structures or units to back them up. Hackers can assist in gaining income, though depending on how carefully you watch your money, this may proved to be a double-edged sword. Air support is recommended, as they are ideal not only for torching attackers or defensive units lying in wait, but can also serve as scouts due to their high speed and relative inability to be shot. The SCUD storm built by the GLA also will not be revealed, and MiGs can traverse the mountain without having to deal with (too many) of the defenders.

Nuclear Winter Kell tower

The tower in which Jarmen Kell hides

When you move your forces through the town, take note of a brown-colored tower near a GLA Palace. Jarmen Kell will be dug in here. He can quickly kill your infantry and the pilots of your vehicles. To make matters worse, since Kell is stealthed, the tower cannot be targeted using regular attack and would have to be force-attacked. It is best to destroy the tower using artillery units or the artillery barrage power.

Black Lotus can be used to sabotage the GLA base; by hugging the left wall of the map until she makes it to the top, she can sneak in and capture various buildings, including the SCUD storm. As the GLA do not seem to rebuild their lost structures (aside from typical GLA hole logic), even merely capturing the superweapon removes the 5000 credit constraint placed upon the player, and allows them to retaliate with their own Nuclear Missiles (and potentially SCUD storms). It is difficult to remove all GLA buildings with Black Lotus, however, as their base has multiple units and stealth-detecting defenses set up.

Tips[]

This mission is notorious for being one of the most difficult in the entire game. The player starts off under attack by enemies and the nearby resources are rather minimal. The enemies always assault the player at full force, which can easily overwhelm the player. To make things even more difficult, the SCUD storm is ready early in the game and its location isn't shown on the map, requiring the player to manually find it.

  • Use Overlords and remaining armor to guard the base's entrance. Capture or destroy the GLA outpost on the plateau. Then build a base.
  • Spend supplies before they reach $5000 by building defenses, armor, and upgrades.
  • Try to secure and capture a Supply Dock near the roadblock and several Oil Derricks nearby.
  • Capture GLA bases to use as cannon fodder while your main force will act as backup.
  • Jarmen Kell must be eliminated by either an airstrike or two Dragon Tanks, one as a bait then the other to eliminate him.

Trivia[]

  • The parade at the end of the stage is real-time rendered on the map, reflecting any damage to civilian buildings caused during the mission.
