The tank bunker is a Yuri garrisonable structure in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge. It is the only structure in the game which is garrisoned by ground vehicles instead of infantry.

Official description[]

When placed, this structure has no method of defence on its own. However, any turreted vehicle except a Magnetron can be garrisoned inside the Tank Bunker, giving it both added defences and additional firepower.

Game structure[]

Vehicles can drive onto the bunker pad and be surrounded by walls raised from the ground. Once inside, the vehicles are immobilized, but still have full use of their weapons. Their rate of fire, damage and weapon range is increased in the process. Ore miners, as well as larger vehicles such as Battle Fortresses and Masterminds are too big to utilize the structure although oddly enough, Apocalypse Tanks can fit in it to utilize its protection. Additionally, vehicles that lack turrets (such as the German Tank Destroyer) cannot be placed within the bunker - presumably for gameplay reasons.

The bunker provides considerable protection against ground assaults especially for lighter vehicles, but not against air attacks or superweapons (most notably, the Chronosphere can teleport vehicles into and out of tank bunkers). A vehicle must be within the structure before the walls are raised, as there is a slight delay before this is done.

Like the Soviet battle bunker, this structure can be built requiring only a construction yard, and consumes no power. For a sacrifice in cost and ground space, one can garrison a Gattling tank in the bunker to achieve a defense identical to, if not stronger than, a Gattling cannon. Interestingly, such a combination has the same price as a Gattling cannon.

Yuri Prime can capture an empty tank bunker, but if it is loaded, he can only capture the vehicle contained inside. The vehicle will remain within the tank bunker unless given different orders, however.

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, the tank bunker's cameo shows it holding a tank which resembles the Soviet Rhino heavy tank instead of any vehicle in Yuri's arsenal.
  • The tank bunker may have been intended to be used by the Soviet, implied by an unused audio file which introduces the tank bunker in a Soviet mission.[citation needed]
    • Further proof is found in the BuildingType's ID prefix: NA is the preffix for Nod/Soviet buildings in TibSun/RA2 respectively. The prefix for Yuri BuildingTypes is YA.
  • Curiously, if a Repair IFV attempts to repair a damaged vehicle stationed within a tank bunker, it will instead repair the tank bunker itself. The IFV will also continue to "repair" the tank bunker even after it reaches its max amount of hit points. This logic still applies if the IFV is also garrisoned, though only if the two (or more) tank bunkers in question are directly adjacent to each other.
    • If the unit who is the target of the repairs is not in a tank bunker, repairs will be performed normally, regardless of whether the Repair IFV is in a tank bunker or not.
