A re-enforced civilian bus, the Battle Bus can carry infantry units to the front line. Transported units can fire weapons from the windows of the Battle Bus. When immobilized, the Battle Bus becomes bunkered cover for the remaining troops.
- Command and Conquer: Generals Zero Hour manual(src)

The battle bus was a GLA heavy infantry transport that was encountered in the late stages of the GLA Conflict.

Game unit[]

Battle Bus (than Bunker)

Immobilized Battle Bus that acts as a bunker

As the only GLA transport whose passengers can fire from within, the Battle Buses is an effective and versatile platform, and one that remains useful even after its initial destruction. It has a reasonable combination of speed and armor. Uniquely, when destroyed, it is transformed into a structure from which infantry can continue to fight. All infantry inside will survive with 50% of their health left. They however will not survive this secondary structure's destruction. Should they exit at this point, it becomes inaccessible and despawns shortly after.

The effectiveness of the Battle Bus depended greatly on which infantry units were inside of it. If fully loaded with rebels, they are vulnerable to enemy vehicles, whereas a payload of RPG troopers won't deal with infantry effectively. An appropriate mix of infantry can be tailored to take on most opponents.

In spite of its lethality up close, the battle bus was very vulnerable to long-ranged attacks. Neutron mines and Nuke cannons with Neutron shells in particular can easily eliminate one by killing its passengers and crew, leaving it open for capture. The same is true for Jarmen Kell, whose ability to kill the driver will prompt all infantry to exit, where they will then become vulnerable. Fixed-wing aircraft can also be an issue, since they can attack the Battle Bus from range long before they could be fired upon, making them evenly matched or even superior to even a fully loaded bus. While its ability to become a makeshift bunker was useful for defending an isolated position, it came at the cost of the vehicle becoming permanently immobilized.

Upgrades[]

Note: any upgrades applicable to the infantry unit riding inside the battle bus will still be applied.

Salvage[]

Like most GLA vehicles, thee battle bus benefited from armor plates salvaged off the battlefield. When upgraded once, its battered frame is noticeably patched up and improved some durability. The second improvement added an intimidating ram to the front, further increasing the bus' durability and allowing the battle bus to crush infantry.

Changelog[]

  • Zero Hour patch 1.03:
    • transported units can now directly target air units
    • speed decreased from 75 to 70
    • occupied battle buses can no longer be captured by hijackers

Trivia[]

GensZHBattleBusDisguise

Disguise ability icon

  • The battle bus tends to fly for a short distance immediately after its destruction before teleporting to solid ground.
  • Its design influenced the Nod Reckoner in Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath, which is almost identical in function, except that the battle bus cannot deploy into a bunker at will, the battle bus will be repaired to full health after being "destroyed" and deployed into a bunker (whereas the Reckoner will have half the health after taking certain damage), and if no infantry garrisoned inside after being destroyed, the battle bus will vanish instantly.
  • Prince Kassad's battle buses would originally inherit bomb truck's disguise ability. If this variant is placed in the Worldbuilder or enable it by INI editing, the disguise ability does nothing, and infantry cannot get out of the bus as the related buttons are absent for some reason.
  • Rodall Juhziz' was to possess his own variant, the Demolition Battle Bus, whose name and cut quotes suggest they would be able to plant demo traps. Only the quotes remain in the Zero Hour files.
