A land mine is a type of area denial ordnance that explodes based on enemy presence.

History[]

Second World War[]

Both the Allies and the Soviet Union used minelayers during the Second World War. Allied mines were primarily anti-tank devices. The Soviets used anti-personnel devices of a design with four trip wires extending radially from the charge.

First Tiberium War[]

Proximity mines were used by GDI and Nod during the First Tiberium War as antipersonnel weapons as a passive layer of defense against commando raids. However, because of their lack of effectiveness against vehicle armor, mines were not used against most military forces.

Third Tiberium War[]

In the Third Tiberium War, both GDI and Nod looked into the widespread usage of deeply buried general-purpose land mines. These new designs had equal effectiveness against both infantry and vehicles. Each faction deployed mines in a different fashion, however: GDI deployed theirs from Guardian APCs (the Steel Talons from their specialized Mobile Repair Transports), while Nod commanders called in Armageddon bombers to airdrop clusters of mines on select locations.

The Marked of Kane developed and utilized a modified version of traditional land mines that, instead of exploding upon impact, latched onto enemy armor and eroded their armor until they were ground down to nothing (or the mines were removed by repair drones). However, these only worked on enemy armor, and infantry were too small to be affected.

All three models of mines were well-buried, and only units equipped with special detection systems were capable of noticing their presence before they exploded.
